Remember Geocities? I do.
If not, here’s a quick refresher, via Wikipedia.
GeoCities was originally founded by David Bohnett and John Rezner in late 1994 as Beverly Hills Internet (BHI). In its original form, site users selected a “city” in which to place their web pages. The “cities” were named after real cities or regions according to their content—for example, computer-related sites were placed in “SiliconValley” and those dealing with entertainment were assigned to “Hollywood”—hence the name of the site.
Basically, Geocities was one of the first free web hosting/designer websites available to the public. I know I had several Geocities pages at the age of 14.
The pages were very simple, like most of the web back then. It seemed mandatory to include random pictures, animated gifs, and ugly colors.
I just found a website that will turn any existing page into a Geocities page. For fun, I tried it on the Octavarius website.
The results were… not pretty.
