When I was a kid, being annoying was a defense mechanism. When my parents were being too mean, I busted out some classic annoying gags.
One common one was singing “The Song that Doesn’t End” from Lambchop’s Play Along. The lyrics go something like:
This is the song that doesn’t ends.
Yes, it goes on and on my friends.
Some people started singing it, not knowing what it was.
And they’ll continue singing it forever just because…
And it went on and on forever until my parents caved in and bought me a damned Star Wars action figure.
One day, while playing with my cousin, my uncle overheard us singing the song. As we reached the end, he joined in, although slightly changing the lyrics to:
Some people started singing it, not knowing what it was.
And they’ll continue singing it ’cause they’re hung up on drugs.
As an eight year old, this was basically the funniest thing I’d ever heard. I didn’t even understand the dark implications of someone so strung out, that all he/she could do is sing the same four line children’s song on repeat.
I’m not even sure I knew why being hung up on drugs would do this to a person.
But to me, this was hilarious. And to be honest, when I sang it to myself while writing this post, I still laughed.
