Recently Brian and I have been in a friendly debate over the sexuality of Bert and Ernie. This began with my foolish comment on his original post Comic Genius in Sesame Street.
A previous comment informed me that Bert and Ernie were forced to move to separate homes, after complaints about them being gay. Instead of the educated response, which would have been:
It is truly shameful that we bow to this bigoted pressure, regardless of the sexuality of Bert and Ernie. They should be free to live where they choose with whom they choose.
But instead I said:
That’s total crap. They were the happiest gay muppets of all time, why do we let our politics drive their love apart?
…and made the assumption that Bert and Ernie were gay.
As it turns out, I was incorrect about Bert and Ernie’s gayess. The research website Snopes has already addressed this urban legend in their article Open Sesame. Bert and Ernie are not gay. The convention of their shared bedroom was more for the sake of staging than civil rights.
But were Bert and Ernie gay, we would still love them. And let them live wherever they chose.
