Although this commercial aired in the mid-1980s, I feel like its transcendental themes translate perfectly to today’s world. As a young child viewing this commercial, I identified with these young folks struggling to get through their first day in high school. Now, as a young man, it’s subtle exploration of man trying to adapt to new surroundings, while still keeping his soul (or in this case, his love for McDonalds) intact, resonates with me more than ever.
Note the literary reference to Montclair High (the school that the children in Cheaper by the Dozen attend) and the visual reference to going Up the Down Staircase. Simply brilliant. Another example of the fine ad work by McDonalds.
Conversely, McDonalds has descended into absurdism with their current commercials and now we have this:
I don’t know why, but I love that stupid commercial. They’ve got me again. Well played, McDonalds.
