Hey there everyone! Since it’s space week, I have been thinking about what role space has played in my life. When I was in 6th grade, my friend Hank and I used to play a space RPG that we made at school. We had planets and weapons and ships and upgrades and the whole lot, and we played it during recesses that we didn’t play Magic, The Gathering. Yes, folks, the guy who is going to teach you how to make a cardboard rocket ship was a nerd in elementary school.
But it was only 2nd grade when Hank and I would go on missions throughout the galaxy in our cardboard rocketship that we made ourselves, and I would like to impart this fun on the current youth of America. That said, the rest of this article is going to be content aimed at bored kids and their parents.
HEY DUDES!!!
Have you ever wanted to go to spaAaAaAaAce? Well, with the power of imagination and an old refrigerator box, now you can!!!
Things you will need: Giant cardboard box, duct tape, markers, plastic wrap, scissors, a jar of frozen Japanese Beetles and space magazines
Things you will not need: a jar of frozen Japanese Beetles
How to make your own rocket:
First, lay your cardboard box lengthwise and choose the best looking side to be the front.
Next, take your scissors and cut out a front window so you can safely navigate space. Second, cut some small windows on the side (as many as you like). Make sure they are smaller than whatever pictures from the space magazine you want to cover them up with. This way, you will be able to look out into space during your travels.
Next, tape plastic wrap over the hole in the front of the ship so you have a safe windshield when flying through the outer reaches of spaAaAaAaAce. Then, add the space pictures over the side windows.
Now, take any other cardboard and adhere it to the outside of the ship in a fun fashion. Maybe throw on some engines, some wings, or even add a whole box to the side and have an escape pod!
Now that you’ve finished that step, its time to get out those frozen Japanese Beetles. Having frozen Japanese Beetles will require that you catch many of these bugs and store them in a jar in your freezer. Now, take out the beetle jar, and spread the beetles all over the top of the spaceship. They won’t come back alive, but they will be able to fall off the side and over the windshield and look like aliens when your ship hits space turbulence.
Lastly, take your markers and decorate the outside of the ship with a big U.S.A. or the word AWESOME or something that fits your space exploration agenda. Also, use those markers to add buttons to the inside of your ship so you can turn on and off your engines or activate any death lasers that you might have installed.
And voila! Now you have your very own spaceship to explore the Milky Way Galaxy! Have fun, and remember, be safe!
