Everyone knows who Gargamel is.
Gargamel is an “evil” wizard and the sworn enemy of the Smurfs. With his trademark catchphrase, “I hate those Smurfs!” Gargamel strikes utter terror into the hearts of the blue men and woman of Smurf Village.
He’s tried to kill the Smurfs under many circumstances. Sometimes he wants to turn them into gold or potions, sometimes he wants to eat them, and sometimes he just wants to destroy them.
However, I feel there may be something deeper driving Gargamel.
Gargamel isn’t made of stone. He can cry, which also means he has feelings. In all likelihood, Gargamel has a mother.
My question: What if Gargamel wasn’t trying to make potions for himself? What if Gargamel was trying to, say, make medicine for his dying mother?
I know it’s crazy. But a man can do crazy things in desperation. What if the only potion that could cure his mother required a dead Smurf carcass?
What if YOUR mother needed help and the only remedy was a tiny adorable blue person? What would YOU do?
I want everyone to think about Gargamel a little today. I’m not saying anything he’s done is right or acceptable, but I certainly don’t know his backstory. He’s a sick man who needs help. I can only hope that he and his family get the help they need.
