I had a long drive back from an 11-hour work day, and to keep myself awake I let iTunes Genius create a very typical 80’s playlist for me. Before long, the B-52’s “Rock Lobster” was blasting in the Hyundai. I apparently hadn’t listened to the song in its entirety, because I was shocked to find that it is over seven minutes long. And absolutely asinine. Oh, and it’s great.
Many things were revealed to me as I watched the live version of the song. For one, I never knew that Fred Schneider had ever wielded an uncle-stache. The other big feeling that I got was that of unexpected jealousy. If you watch past the six-minute point, the song devolves into the band making silly animal noises and squeals. The B-52’s got paid very handsomely for doing this.This is the kind of opportunity I want. I want to be able to make dolphin noises into a microphone and get paid for it.
