I was getting my daily dose of news this morning from the Chicago Tribune website and I found
an article that has given me one more reason why newspapers are behind the times. Today, June 11, 2009, the Chicago Tribune has discovered that nachos are a staple of school lunches. They are served at least once a week and in some schools they are served every day.
I don’t know about you guys, but nachos smothered in cheese and sprinkled with ground beef has been a lunch option for me since I was 6 years old. That was 18 years ago. NEWS!
Here are some highlights from the article by news breakin’ Monca Eng!
Giving kids nachos for lunch may seem surprising in a district that serves neighborhoods where childhood obesity rates are more than double the national average.
More shocking news. Nachos with “cheese”, ground beef, served with chocolate milk and tater tots is bad for you!
Add the tater tots, chocolate milk and an apple common on school lunch trays, and the total reaches about 923 calories, 37 grams of fat and 1,470 milligrams of sodium. Each figure is about half or more of the daily allowance recommended in federal dietary guidelines for moderately active children ages 9 to 13.
Serving this kind of food to kids isn’t just unhealthy in the short term; it can permanently affect children’s eating habits, said Dr. David Kessler, a pediatrician and former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.
I’m glad Monica Eng and the Chicago Tribune broke this story. Now we can finally stop the crunchy killer of kids everywhere: Nachos at school lunch!
