Today I’m going to start something big. Or small, depending on how you look at it.
First, a little introduction: When we here at Octavarius create a new post for America, we tag it with a number of keywords, making it easier for you to find. If you go to our tag cloud at the right side of your screen and click on “How Bwo Will Die”, for instance, you’ll find all articles that relate to it. Being based on a very small-scale idea, Twitter does not have a function allowing users to tag their tweets for easy categorization. What they do have is trending: keeping track of what people are tweeting about and showing users what lots of people are talking about. (Ex. if 2 million people have “New Moon” in their tweets, Twitter shows everyone that “New Moon” is a hot topic.) Somewhere along the line, users realized that they could add artificial tags to their tweets by adding a “#” before a word or phrase. There are now a number of fun “hashtags” floating around, including #MusicMonday to share a favorite song with other users, #haiku when tweeting in a 5/7/5 format, and even those that begin sentences (i.e. “#YouMightBeARedneck if…”) People pick up on these trends and go crazy with them on their own. And it spreads like wildfire.
This is where I come in and claim the Twitter throne.
As of today I have started my own hashtag to describe something that I really like. I’m going to start using the hashtag “#ihaveaboner4”, and I’m going to use it often enough for people to pick up on it and start using it for themselves. So instead of saying “I love this spicy chicken sandwich!!!”, they could say “#ihaveaboner4 this spicy chicken sandwich!!!” I’m going to keep track of how often people are using this hashtag:
When I see someone using it that I know doesn’t normally read this website, swish.
If I start to see people using it that I don’t know at all, I’m heating up.
If people are using it at least once an hour, I’m on fire.
If the hashtag gets used at least once every 5 minutes, it has officially become a Twitter meme, meaning I have successfully conquered Twitter.
Go.
